The Charente Maritime has something to offer everyone, whatever you want from a holiday.
Situated on the SW coast, the area has 470 kilometres of coastline, with over 110 beautiful sandy beaches for those who wish to relax and bask in the sunshine (the department has the second longest hours of annual sunlight after the Côte d'Azur).

If you prefer sight seeing to sunbathing, you will find an abundance of roman architecture, prehistoric remains, breathtaking coastal walks, colourful local markets and so much more, all within easy reach.

There are numerous medieval churches and abbeys, and many beautiful old towns to visit including Saintes, Jonzac, Cognac and La Rochelle, each with their own particular character and charm.

Your travels will take you through miles of beautiful, open countryside with field after field of sunflowers, maize and, most importantly, vines.

For those seeking a gastronomic experience, the local cuisine is fresh produce, lovingly prepared. In addition to good food, the Charente is probably most famous for its cognac and pineau. Distillers including Hennessy, Martell, Courvoisier and Remy Martin are situated nearby in the town of Cognac, and all offer guided tours and tastings.
The Charente is also home to hundreds of smaller producers who give a warm welcome to anyone wishing to get a closer look at the production methods and experience the diverse flavours that can be found in cognac. Many of these also make pineau (a delicious aperitif of grape juice and cognac). Phiolin itself is home to the 'Domaine du Chene' distillery, where visitors are welcome to drop in and try their award winning produce.
